The F5 is the same thing as what railfans call a phase 4 F3. The F5 had the=
same traction motors, cables, and blowers as the F7s. The F5s were built f=
rom August 1948 to February 1949. The term F5 was used by EMD's marketing t=
eam and is not an official locomotive designation.

Jim-

The article is Diesel Era Volume 10 Number 4, which is July/August 1999. I=
don't know the author (am not at home right now) and the Withers Publishin=
g site doesn't reveal that. However, the DE article most definitely assert=
s that there were D&RGW F5's. Thanks for the link to Don's specific page o=
n the F5; I hadn't seen that link, and the main roster page at http://utahr=
ails.net/drgw/rg-diesels-4.php#f5a-drgw5551<https://nam03.safelinks.protect=
ion.outlook.com/?url=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Futahrails.net%2Fdrgw%2Frg-diesels-4.php=

WmsyrjFYbzl9cDXth4FIhqA4d9uP0LbKms%3D&reserved=3D0> is rather ambiguous on =
the subject. I read the F5 page and his data and argument, and I completel=
y agree with him, that the Grande had none. One thing is sure-- that time =
was one of transition and rapid change. I also was able to confirm somethi=
ng I suspected, that the DE article relied on Joe Strapac's book as a sourc=
e on the F5 question, which may not be the most iron-clad of sources.

The DE article says that the 556 set was delivered with F3-style slotted dy=
namic brake vents. If the also had the D17 traction motor, it seems they s=
hould have been classified as F3's. However, as I believe they were later =
upgraded on both features, however they started out they certainly ended up=
as F7's.

For the modeler: find a dated photograph! (as always)

According to the article, there were no F5's. Was it Don that wrote it or =
someone else.
