Hi Jim,

I have a 7 car Walthers D&RGW Prospector, including the baggage in=
front. I
have two helixes and three hidden staging yards. In one of the st=
aging
yards the entry has a 19", 3% curve entry out of sight, and the one h=
idden
helix also has a 19" radius. Obvious the coaches didn't like this, ho=
wever
it is working flawlessly now after the following modifications:
1. I =
replaced the couplers with long shank Kadees, setting the diaphragms
1mm ap=
art when strung out (when slack is taken up it is tight). I can live
with t=
hat as a compromise, and it really does not draw the eye to it.
2. I had to=
trim the centre sill significantly to accommodate truck swing
at all angle=
s. The modification is not visible at all when the coach is on
the tracks. =
There are also some other small protrusions that has to be
trimmed under th=
e floor. Work in small increments, test, some more
trimmings, test. Patienc=
e, patience and new sharp blades....
3. There were some small aspects trimm=
ed on the inside of the trucks to
further improve truck swing. The modifica=
tion is not visible at all when
the coach is on the tracks.
4. I had to add=
some weight to the baggage car in front to improve
reliability
5. Operatin=
g considerations: Getting in and out of that 19", 3% hidden
curve at stagin=
g (tunnel entry) requires slow train orders, which actually
add to operatin=
g interest.

After all above, I can truly say that the train tracks very we=
ll, and save
for the 1mm gap between diaphragms when strung out, none of th=
e
modifications are visible during normal operations.

I also have one ques=
tion though: How do one get these roofs off without
damaging anything in or=
der to detail the insides of the coaches?

Regards
Xander van Breda
